Do you have what it takes to be a coach?

In this newsletter we will be exploring the transformative world of coaching. Whether you’re an experienced professional looking for a career change or a beginner exploring new avenues, coaching offers tremendous opportunities for personal and professional development.

When we talk about coaching, we couple it with purpose-driven leadership and focus on the strengths individuals possess. Therin lies an extraordinary opportunity to facilitate positive change by empowering people and organizations to align their actions with meaningful values, undergo transformation, and make a lasting impact on the world and their team.

There was this one client I worked with whose challenges seemed difficult and deeply rooted. It would have been easy for me to give up or say I’ve done all I can, but I couldn’t bring myself to do that. I kept pushing forward, week after week, patiently asking questions that might unravel intricate learned behaviors and growing up patterns. And you know what? It finally paid off.

One day, she had a breakthrough, a moment of clarity where she could truly see the positive impact her work was having and why it mattered to focus on strengths and purpose. Moments like this deepen my conviction that coaching isn’t just a profession, it’s a transformative journey that can change lives and allow you to make a greater contribution. That’s what inspires me to keep going.

Here are 10 key criteria for being a great coach–or what one should expect to receive when hiring a coach (some of these are more natural strengths for certain people given their styles, but even so, I believe they can all be learned.

  1. A Strengths Focus–so you can guide clients and their teams to identify, understand, appreciate, and apply their strengths.
  2. Emotional Agility–so you can effectively navigate your own emotions and those of all the varied people you serve, especially in stressful situations, to help clients feel understood and supported.
  3. Be warm and approachable–so you can establish trust and build rapport for open communication with your client.
  4. Need to be consistently joyful in order to bring positivity and support to the coaching journey.
  5. Able and willing to ask deep, evocative, and relevant questions that will draw out mindsets, blockages, hopes and dreams, and areas for the client’s development.
  6. Strong communication skills that build trust and lasting connections to aid understanding and implementation.
  7. Motivational abilities to enhance client commitment and productivity.
  8. A commitment to breakthroughs and progress to help clients reflect internally on what’s blocking progress as well as uncover underlying doubts and fears.
  9. A willingness to walk into difficult situations and speak truth–Radical Candor.
  10. The ability to balance the act of challenging, supporting, provoking, and motivating.

How many of these skills do you already have? Think about it. As I previously mentioned, the skills can be learned or developed further. Perhaps the more important question is, “How passionate are you about seeing lives transformed with the help of your dedicated assistance?”
